Apparel Imports Slip in November

Total US imports of goods and services rose in November, but apparel did not participate in the increase.
Apparel imports fell 0.7% in November compared to the same month last year, to $6.7 billion. On a 12-month smoothed basis, apparel imports declined 2%.
Apparel imports from Vietnam have increased this year, while those from China, India and Pakistan have fallen.
November’s numbers might have been impacted by an approximately week-long port strike in Southern California late in the month.
Apparel exports rose by 5.9%, to $474 million. There have been big year-to-date increases in the total value of exports to Mexico, Canada, and Japan, but decreases to Honduras, the DR, and El Salvador.

Footwear trade slowed in November compared to the year-ago period. Imports slipped .5% to $2 billion. China continues to gain significant footwear share, and on a year-to-date basis comprises over 73% of all footwear imports. Vietnam was next with a 10% share, followed at a distance by Italy, with a 5% share. Exports dropped 4% to $73 million. The biggest U.S. export markets for footwear are Canada, South Korea and the Caribbean basin.

Total US imports of goods and services were $196 billion, a 3.4% increase from November 2011, about half the rate of October’s increase. There have been increases in imports of consumer goods, automobiles, capital goods, and industrial supplies and materials.
Total exports increased by 4%, to $131 billion, led by jumps in consumer goods, automobiles and automotive products, capital goods, and foods and beverages.
