Marquee Brands is expanding its activewear footprint.
The company announced Wednesday that it had acquired outdoor sports brand Body Glove and Body Glove International’s related intellectual property assets.
“Adding to Marquee’s portfolio of heritage brands, Body Glove represents what great brands are all about,” Marquee Brands president Michael DeVirgilio said in a press release. “There is tremendous growth ahead for Body Glove to develop new product categories that cater to a consumer that embraces life, the outdoors and an active lifestyle.”
Launched by twin brothers Bob and Bill Meistrell in 1953, Body Glove has developed into one of the most popular outdoor sports brands in the world and offers a wide variety of surfing apparel. Body Glove initiated the wetsuit technology movement and today, the brand serves as a reliable garment for water sport consumers.
The Meistrell family will remain partners with Marquee Brands and be part of Body Glove’s future growth. Along with the acquisition, Marquee Brands is opening a West Coast office for Body Glove’s management and marketing teams. With headquarters in New York and design offices in London, the new west coast office will serve as another key regional spot for Marquee Brands’ business interests.
Body Glove is the third investment for Marquee Brands, following its acquisition of Italian luxury brand Bruno Magli and British fashion brand Ben Sherman. Marquee will continue to build Body Glove as a brand and further its cultural impact on California’s surf culture.
“We are very proud of the brands we have acquired at Marquee and remain committed to building a diversified global portfolio,” Marquee Brands director Zachary Sigel said. “Body Glove is our first acquisition in the Active and Outdoor sector which will continue to be a focus area for Marquee moving forward.”
