The United Arab Emirates is shifting to the metric system for the textile sector starting in 2014. The Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology developed the new regulations, and merchants not using the metric system will face legal action.
The country is attempting to unify measurement nationwide, to bring it on par with global standards. The regulations have been delayed once, having originally been scheduled to come online November 11, 2011.
Land measurement has been converted from feet to meters and gasoline measurement has been changed from gallons to liters. The moves are largely prompted by the UAE’s obligations as a member of the World Trade Organization.
