AAFA Creates Industry Testing Guidelines for Legwear Sector

Rivet's 2020 Denim Circularity report takes a deep dive into how the global denim industry is plotting its circular future amidst a worldwide pandemic.

The American Apparel & Footwear Association, in collaboration with the Manufacturing Solutions Center released industry guidelines on Thursday establishing testing standards for legwear, hosiery and socks.

Covering a range of issues—including product safety, labeling and physical attributes such as color, fastness, and fit—this resource provides helpful, product-specific testing recommendations for the industry and its lab partners.

“These testing guidelines are the latest in a series of member-driven tools that AAFA has released to help the industry ensure cost-effective solutions for common problems,” said Rick Helfenbein, president and chief executive officer of the American Apparel & Footwear Association.

Helfenbein said the AAFA’s Legwear Testing Task Force crafted the resource.

“The legwear industry is very unique,” Dan St. Louis, director of the Manufacturing Solutions Center at Catawba Valley Community College, said. “Specific industry testing guidelines are long overdue to ensure the industry has the proper and specific guidance it needs to produce quality, compliant products.”

This testing guidelines document is a free, open-industry resource that will be housed on the AAFA and MSC web sites. It covers all types of knitted hosiery material produced on hosiery knitting machines. The guidelines include quantitative and qualitative fiber analysis in areas such as colorfastness and sizing. It also includes testing standards for flammability, chemicals, shrinkage and additive properties.
