Bangladesh: 4 Factories in Gazipur Sealed Off, Fined for Pollution

Four washing and dyeing factories were sealed off earlier this month and have now been fined for emitting harmful chemicals into the Turag river in Gazipur, Bangladesh.

Bangladesh’s Department of Environment (DoE) fined M and M Washing and Dyeing Mills, Colour Mark Washing Ltd., Unique Textile Mills Ltd., and Laundry Gate Ltd. Tk 20 lakh ($25,885) each for polluting the environment and damaging the local ecosystem in the Tongi Bisic Industrial Area, according to the Dhaka Tribune.

At a hearing at the DoE headquarters, owners and representatives from the accused factories said they had been working together to establish a central effluent treatment plant. So far, the group has reportedly accrued a fund of Tk 3 crore ($388k) to set up the plant.

Md Mohiduddin, president of the Tongi Bisic Industrial Area Factory Owners’ Association pledged to install the plant within four months, the Dhaka Tribune reported.
