Factories now have access to a new program that will improve their environmental performance.
Intertek announced its partnership with the Business Environmental Performance Initiative (BEPI) on a new set of tools called the Supply Chain Chemical Management Module (SCCM). SCCM adds to global supply chain sustainability efforts because it helps factories reduce the risks of hazardous chemical management.
“The work that the BEPI does is making a difference to communities around the world that depend on a more sustainable supply chain. As the exclusive service provider for chemical management audits and wastewater/sludge testing, Intertek is proud of our contributions to the development of this program,” said Christophe Liebon, Intertek’s business assurance vice-president of supplier management, in a public statement.
BEPI’s choice to work with Intertek is quite timely with the greater concern about chemical management in footwear and textile factories. BEPI also recently partnered up with the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) to address this ongoing industry issue.
Due to Intertek’s extensive efforts of better chemical management and environmentally-friendly manufacturing, the company was selected by BEPI to collaborate on this new module. Intertek in April opened the largest textile testing lab in the UK in order to improve the nation’s international manufacturers with better inspection services. Earlier this year, Intertek also expanded its footwear testing solutions in Shanghai.
Intertek and BEPI’s collaboration on SCCM is one step towards better global supply chain sustainability. According to BEPI, the new program will focus on five categories: common tools and standards, monitoring, capacity building, outreach and guidance.
