ZDHC’s Latest Move to Ease Chemical Compliance

ZDHC is furthering its compliance efforts with another major certification.

On Wednesday, the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) Programme announced that it will accept Eco Passport by Oeko-Tex certification as an indicator of Manufacturing Restricted Substances List (MRSL) conformance. This move furthers ZDHC’s mission of removing hazardous chemicals from apparel supply chains and enables chemical suppliers to foster eco-friendly practices.

“We understand that chemical suppliers face challenges. The industry, consumers, governments, and NGOs are asking for safer chemistries to be used in supply chains and that takes a degree of transparency. The Eco Passport program serves as a trusted third-party system to review formulations,” said John Frazier, Sr. technical director for Oeko-Tex in North America. “We help chemical suppliers verify their formulations while safeguarding their intellectual property (recipes).”

The Eco Passport program evaluates a broad range of chemicals, including auxiliaries, colorants and scouring agents, in a secure two-step process that ensures the formulations and individual ingredients (CAS level chemicals), adhere to specific standards for regulatory compliance, safety and sustainability. Chemical formulations are checked against Oeko-Tex’s concerned substances list and then tested in labs to verify they are free from unsafe contaminants. Compounds that pass these two testing stages are granted the Eco Passport certification.

Unlike other compliance standards, the passport enables chemical suppliers to confidently ensure that that their chemical products are safe to use for apparel production and comply with ZDHC’s MRSL guidelines. For transparency purposes, companies may also check chemical suppliers’ certification numbers on Oeko-Tex’s website.
