Perry Ellis International’s (PEI) founder and CEO, George Feldenkreis, has officially stepped down from his post after leading the company for almost 50 years.

His son, Oscar Feldenkreis, will succeed him as chief executive officer, as a previously released leadership plan announced, as the elder Feldenkreis shifts into the role of executive chairman.

Oscar Feldenkreis joined the company in 1980, when it was named Supreme International. He was elected president and chief operating officer in 1993 and elected to the board in 2005. According to a press release Thursday, he played a key role in expanding the scope of the business beyond private-label distribution into branded men’s and women’s apparel.

“Speaking on behalf of the entire board, we wish to thank George for his insightful vision and leadership over the past years, and we look forward to his continued guidance at the board level and as executive chairman,” Jane DeFlorio, lead director of the board for PEI, said, noting how the company has grown to employ more than 2,600 people and achieve annual revenues of nearly $1 billion. “I am delighted to have such an experienced and talented chief executive in Oscar, who will no doubt lead PEI to its next stage of growth and expansion.”

Commenting on the future of PEI, Oscar Feldenkreis said, “Going forward, we will remain focused on continuing to meet the changing needs of our consumers, as well as on growing and building value for our shareholders by optimizing our global portfolio, driving international growth, expanding our direct-to-customer footprint and expanding profit margins.”

PEI is actively seeking a new COO.

Late last month, the company announced the signing of new license agreements with Multimoda Import Inc. & Comercio Excelente Norte Sur De DV, a distributor and retail fashion leader in Mexico and Latin America, for the Perry Ellis brand. As part of the agreement, Perry Ellis will sell men’s and boy’s dress shirts, knit tops, woven tops, pants, sport jackets, shorts, jeans, swim trunks, vests and outerwear as a collection under the Perry Ellis brand to sportswear departments in select countries in Central and South America, the Caribbean and Mexico.
