Pantone Introduces Ultra Violet as 2018’s Color of the Year

Pantone unveiled its must-have color for the year ahead—Ultra Violet—which the color company said represents humanity’s move to intellectualism, imagination and creative possibilities.

On Tuesday, Pantone revealed Ultra Violet, or PANTONE 18-3838, as 2018’s Color of the Year and the successor to this year’s Greenery.

“From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come. Complex and contemplative, Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now,” Pantone Color Institute executive director Leatrice Eiseman said. “The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own.”

Ultra Violet’s mystical presence continues to thrive today. The hue is often associated with mindful practices, including meditation, that enable people to peacefully seek refuge from their digital lifestyles. Purple-toned lighting, décor and apparel have been used in community gatherings to stimulate innovative thinking, while providing a peaceful environment for interactions. Ultra Violet has also served as a symbol of counterculture and the arts—with music icons, like David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix and Prince, previously wearing the color to personally express themselves. Unlike other colors, Ultra Violet stands out and makes its mark on the senses—facilitating a feeling of newness, accessibility and innovation.

In fashion, Ultra Violet has gained momentum in men’s and women’s styles over the past few months. On both the runway and the streets, the industry has gravitated to the shade to play up current apparel, accessories and footwear combinations. Consumers have also favored Ultra Violet for its pairing versatility and incorporated more of the color into their clothing. Pantone says the color will pair well with other metallic shades, like gold and silver, and steps up fabrics, like lush velvets, that are now being worn for leisure and evening outings. Ultra Violet is expected to continue to gain momentum in fashion this year, as the industry and consumers become more inspired to shake up what they wear.
