Uniqlo Launches Water-Repellent Ultra Light Down

Fashion is at a crossroads: continue with cutting-edge strategies developed to persevere during Covid or slide back into familiar (yet unprofitable) habits? Get the experts' perspective at our in-person Sourcing Summit, Oct. 19 at New York’s Cipriani 42nd Street.

Japanese casual wear brand, Uniqlo has launched its first water-repellent Ultra Light Down (ULD) outerwear for spring 2015.

The water-repellent line features lightweight fabric that allows water to slide right off, while retaining heat in the rain and snow.

This technology is offered in the Ultra Light Down Parka, which combines a casual and sporty look, and in the Water Defender coat, Uniqlo’s newest outwear piece. Both outerwear pieces can be packed down compactly into a small pouch for easy transport.

The Ultra Light Down Parka features a streamlined silhouette and a high collar and hood to keep the cold out.

The Water Defender is the latest in the company’s ULD outerwear, which offers rainy day comfort in an ultra light package.

In conjunction with textile company, Toray, Uniqlo developed its ULD, which first hit stores in 2010. This down offers heat retention while incorporating what the brand calls a perfect balance between warmth and lightness.

The Ultra Light Down Parka is priced at $79.90 for men and women, while the Water Defender is priced at $79.90 for women and $69.90 for men. All styles are now available in stores and online at Uniqlo.com.
