Applied DNA and A&E Join Forces on Anti-Counterfeiting Sewing Thread

Raw materials are getting smarter and more secure as companies tap technology to improve transparency—Applied DNA Sciences a leader among those companies.

The molecular technologies provider, which offers tools that enable supply chain security, anti-counterfeiting and anti-theft technology, is collaborating with thread manufacturer American & Efird (A&E) to utilize its CertainT platform to develop secure sewing threads for brand protection.

The new platform follows A&E’s previous work with the U.S. government to ensure supply of domestic products that comply with the Berry Amendment, plus its work with industrial and consumer brands that require strict controls on product quality and integrity.

“The CertainT Program is an innovative solution for brands and retailers in their supply chain,” A&E CEO Les Miller, said. “A&E and Applied DNA Sciences together are creating new security applications for sewing thread benefiting from revolutionary SigNatureT DNA and Beacon technology. Our customers are increasingly more vigilant and security minded. DNA technology can protect a wide range of products, from luxury consumer brands to industrial applications where integrity of components is mission critical.”

SigNature DNA is the core technology ingredient that’s part of Applied DNA’s suite of uncopyable, security and authentication solutions such aimed at supply transparency in textile and apparel supply chains. The Beacon technology used for the sewing thread works with an encrypted fluorescing signal that acts as a covert screening tool, which can be easily adapted to packaging and labels through inks, varnishes and coatings. Each Beacon marker contains a unique molecular tag, creating a strong and flexible end-to-end security solution.

“Many products, from running shoes, to performance athleisure wear, to luxury brands, can benefit from a secure sewing thread,” Applied DNA president and CEO Dr. James Hayward, said. “A&E’s extensive portfolio of products combined with the CertainT platform provide a powerful opportunity to provide a trusted solution for customers who need a true anti-counterfeiting brand protection solution.”
