In the latest collaboration to celebrate its 50th year in business, Invista Inc.’s Cordura brand is teaming with wool yarn producer Südwolle Group to create a variety of endurance nylon 6,6 and wool blend yarns.
The Südwolle Group Cordura brand wool yarn qualities include blends with merino wool, as well as innovative wool, yak and nylon 6,6 fiber options. These yarns offer enhanced abrasion resistance, tear and tensile strength performance—all important characteristics in the athleisure market—in finished fabric constructions in a range of counts and styles.
The Südwolle Group Cordura X Merino yarns have been developed for the creation of a variety of woven and knitted Cordura Combat Wool fabrics, with the natural comfort and thermoregulation benefits of wool in combination with the durability of nylon. Constructed using highly engineered nylon 6,6 staple fiber technologies, Cordura Combat Wool fabrics are designed to be used in traditional everyday essential apparel applications such as men’s suits, school uniforms, outdoor active sports gear and professional corporate wear where there is a need for clothing to be strong, soft, comfortable and long-lasting.

In the past two years, Südwolle Group has also expanded its company and range of products. With supply chains in Europe and Asia, including fiber treatment, spinning and dyeing, it has a commitment to quality, environmental performance and global employee management systems.
McNaull said Cordura had only recently begun working with Südwolle, but had done some previous collaborations on Combat Wool with other mills. These include Taiwan’s Chia Her, Burlington Industries in the U.S. for lightweight wovens, Japanese mill Sunshine Group and Marlane in Italy.
Cordura and Südwolle are working on developing new fabrics with nylon properties to create less piling and more make the fabric even more durable. Apparel using the fabric will be seen at the retail level about a year from now.
McNaull said Cordura decided to take the collaborative approach to growing the brand and celebrating its golden anniversary because, “We wanted to celebrate with some of the brands and mills that have helped us get where we are today. We couldn’t have gotten to 50 years if we didn’t have some wonderful partners along the way.”
Previous collaborations in the last year have been with Woolrich, Cone Denim and Lenzing Tencel. Coming up are joint projects with Carhartt to relaunch its iconic chore coat; Cotton Incorporated for a line of Cordura Trans Dry durable moisture management fabrics to bow this summer, and Dupont Tate & Lyle’s Susterra bio-based fabric, with two new fabrics launching next week at Techtextil in Germany, one for apparel and one for footwear.
“That’s been the biggest pivot for us—taking a legacy of our brand being primarily a gear and backpack rugged fabric and trying to break the paradigm and getting people to recognize that you don’t just have to be rough and tough to be durable, you can be delicate or soft yet durable, too,” McNaull added.
Known for its resistance to abrasions, tears and scuffs, Cordura fabric is a primary ingredient in many of the world’s leading high-performance gear and apparel products, ranging from luggage, upholstery and backpacks to footwear, military equipment, tactical wear, workwear and performance apparel.
Südwolle Group’s brands include Südwolle for weaving, Biella Yarn for flat knitting, Yarn in Motion for circular knitting, Richter for hosiery, Stöhr in technical knits and Soey for airjet looming.
