Textile Exchange Releases 27 New Material Snapshots

Textile Exchange (TE) this week released the next wave of its new series of Material Snapshots.

Produced last year with financial support from apparel and footwear giant VF Corp. and in collaboration with Brown and Wilmanns Environmental, LLC, the new documents are designed to offer an in-depth overview of 27 fibers and materials, including BCI Cotton, hemp and spandex, to name just three. These are in addition to the 29 other insights the nonprofit released in January.

Available on a complimentary basis to TE members or for purchase by non-members, the nonprofit organization said that each “snapshot” combines available lifecycle assessment data and information with detailed reviews to provide an overview of unit process descriptions, process inputs and outputs, and performance and processing attributes.

In addition, it highlights potential concerns (both social and ethical), availability, certification and pricing details, and system diagrams, as well as suggested questions to ask when sourcing the material.

“The new snapshots are designed for more technical users such as materials, sourcing and sustainability professionals,” a press release from TE said, noting that users seeking a more concise view of a fiber or textile should consult its previously released Material Summaries. “The two sets of resources—the existing Material Summaries and the new Material Snapshots—are designed to be used alongside each other within an organization to help educate and enable informed, intelligent fiber and material choices.”

Founded in 2002, TE works with all sectors of the textile supply chain to improve the sustainability of the $1.7 trillion apparel industry. Earlier this year, the nonprofit released the first draft of its Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) for a public stakeholder review by interested parties.
