Toray Acquires Italian Carbon Fiber Fabric Business

Japan’s integrated chemical industry group, Toray Industries, Inc., announced that it has entered an agreement with Saati, a highly advanced Italian international textile and chemical group, to obtain its European carbon fiber fabric and pre-impregnated composite fibers, or prepreg, business.

Toray is currently involved in the carbon fiber business starting from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) pioneer at its French subsidiary, Toray Carbon Fibers Europe S.A. (CFE), and CFRP parts business that uses carbon fiber fabric at its German subsidiaries of Euro Advanced Carbon Fiber Composites GmbH (EACC) and ACE Advanced Composite Engineering GmbH (ACE). Toray said in a report it will establish its own integrated supply chain through this plan, strengthening the structure of its business in Europe.

Moving forward, Toray Group will hand over its technology to CIT while aiming to expand the business beyond Europe through leveraging its global sales channel. Saati’s carbon fiber and prepreg business has been noticeably expanding in past years as a customer of Toray’s carbon fiber-related companies, particularly of CFE, under both companies. The premium automobile field has been highly acclaimed by the market for its speedy response to a customer’s necessities, despite its late entrance into the market.

The company said in its report, “Toray positions its Carbon Fiber Composite Materials Business as one of the Strategically Expanding Businesses and plans to drive forward exponential expansion of the business by proactive investment of management resources including M&A under the medium-term management program ‘Project AP-G 2016’ launched in April 2014. The acquisition of CIT is part of this strategy, and Toray aims to expand and advance its Carbon Fiber Composite Materials Business through enhancing its supply chain.”

Toray specializes in industrial products centered on technologies inorganic synthetic chemistry, polymer chemistry and biochemistry. Saati uses its three divisions that include printing fabrics and chemicals for screen printing, technical fabrics and components for filtration and separation, and composites & protection systems for composites and systems and light to stay active in the market.
