Survey: Teens Are Favoring Athletic Footwear, Trend-Driven Brands

A recent consumer survey finds that while teens are spending less year-over-year, they’re spending the same amount on athletic footwear and a bit more on clothing.

According to the Taking Stock With Teens research survey, which focuses on spending trends and brand preferences among teenagers, while teen spending is down 4.4%, clothing sales to teenagers ticked up slightly. Though it’s down slightly from last year, Nike still came out on top, with 23 percent of mindshare, followed by American Eagle at 11 percent. Adidas, Forever 21 and Hollister rounded out the top five with 4 percent each.

Though athletic apparel is moderating a bit, there has been no slowdown in sales for athletic footwear. In fact, the survey says Nike, Vans, Adidas and Converse account for over 75 percent of mindshare. Birkenstock rounded out the top five with 2 percent.
