Major League Baseball Announces Big Apparel Deal for 2016 Season

When it’s deliver-or-die, supply chains become the lifeblood of a company. To that end, the fashion industry has embraced technology to navigate today’s hyper-complicated supply chain, with myriad solutions shaping the first, middle and last mile. Call it Sourcing 2.0.

It’s a couple weeks into the 2016 Major League Baseball season and the organization has already announced a shake-up to the lineup.

Merchandise lineup, that is. The professional sports league has teamed up with SustainU, a West Virginia-based apparel company that uses fabrics from 100 percent recycled materials that are made in the U.S.A., to create licensed tees.

“We are so proud to launch our new line of products with Major League Baseball,” Chris Yura, founder and CEO of SustainU, stated. “We represent American craftsmanship, innovation and localized production. This pairs perfectly with America’s pastime and we’re excited to showcase our collection online and in stadiums around the country.”

Teams from both the National League and American League are represented in the clothing line, dubbed MLB by SustainU. The T-shirts are made from a 50-50 blend of recycled cotton and polyester and feature screen-printed graphics that the brand said “embody inspiration from fashion, Millennials and outdoor adventure.”

“In our initial research,” a blog post on the brand’s website explained, “We found that eco-friendly and/or sustainable options already out there were either too expensive or inaccessible to most sports fans. Furthermore, we discovered there are untapped retail distribution opportunities within the traditional sales channels for sports-licensed products (for example, outdoor/adventure).”

That’s why the line is split into five collections—Brand, Elements, Conserve/Nation (featuring RealTree, which combines camo with fan-focused logos and marks), IPA (Internationally Produced Apparel) and Music—and retails from $30 to $35.

MLB by SustainU is available now in stadiums and online.
