Nike and Walmart, two of the world’s largest retailers, have pledged to source 100 percent of their electricity from renewable energy, joining the RE100 campaign, which works to engage, support and showcase businesses committed to 100 percent renewable energy.
The RE100 campaign is led by non-profit organizations, the Climate Group and CDP, which both aid companies and governments in adapting sustainable policies.
“Climate change is a global issue that requires global solutions,” said Eric Sprunk, chief operating officer at Nike. “We believe that collaboration is important to accelerate and scale sustainable innovations that have potential to change the world, and Nike is proud to join the leading global brands in RE100 with our commitment to reach 100 percent renewable energy.”
The companies chose to unveil the news at the 2015 Climate Week NYC, which is taking place from Sept. 21-28. Since the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP21) is coming up in December, the Climate Group said the event serves as a timely reminder to negotiators that businesses want strong climate action from governments and increased demand for renewables.
“Walmart set out on its journey to be powered by 100 percent renewable beginning in 2005, and today’s pledge with RE100 further affirms the importance of our aspirational goal,” said Enrique Ostale, president and CEO of Walmart Latin America. “With much of Walmart’s projected growth over the coming years set to take place in Central and Latin America, we are committed to increasing demand for renewable energy globally.”
Goldman Sachs, Johnson & Johnson, Procter & Gamble, Salesforce, Steelcase, Starbucks and Voya Financial have also recently joined RE100. The campaign now has a total 36 major businesses from around the world on board since its launch one year ago.
Its original corporate partners include, IKEA Group, H&M, Unilever and Nestle, among others.
