Westfield is helping mall shoppers reduce their carbon footprint with a new sustainable initiative.
In celebration of Earth Day, the global shopping center introduced Refashion the Future, a new recycling program that rewards shoppers for bringing in their used garments and footwear.
Refashion the Future allows millions of shoppers to take part in creating a more circular economy. By turning in their old and unwanted clothing and shoes at participating Westfield properties, shoppers could minimize textile waste and provide their goods with a second life.
On their shopping trip, customers may bring at least 10 pounds of unwanted items to a Westfield concierge desk. Once they turn in their items, shoppers will receive a program rewards card that provides shopping deals and promotions at participating retailers, including Forever 21 and H&M.
The project is a collaborative effort between Westfield and I:Collect (I:CO), an international provider for the reuse of apparel, footwear and other consumer textiles. At participating malls, I:CO will collect and sort shoppers’ donated items to save resources and be used for other products. Items that are still in good condition and wearable will be sent to secondhand shops, while any unwearable items will be processed into secondhand materials for new products, including insulation materials. In some cases, fibers extracted from unwanted goods will be upcycled into new apparel and resold at other retailers.
After collecting shoppers’ unwanted goods, I:CO pays Westfield a fee and all program proceeds are donated to Glam4Good, a non-profit that promotes positive social change through fashion. Glam4Good currently provides educational experiences, clothing giveaways and confidence-boosting style efforts to help communities in need.
Westfield malls participating in the program include Westfield Annapolis, Maryland, Westfield Century City, California, Westfield Garden State Plaza, New Jersey, Westfield Montgomery, Maryland, Westfield San Francisco Center, California, Westfield Santa Anita, California, Westfield Topanga & The Village, California, Westfield UTC, California and Westfield Valley Fair, California.
