Activewear has worked its way into the mainstream, making for more than just gym clothes, and now it’s making its way into workwear.
Sporstwear supplier Esmetex launched a line of lightweight casual and dress shirt fabric that cools and wicks moisture thanks to Unifi’s Sorbtek technology and incorporates recycled materials courtesy Repreve, an eco-friendly performance technology that’s also a Unifi branded product.
Sorbtek lets the shirting fabric act like activewear, wicking moisture to keep the wearer cooler, drier and more comfortable, and it has soil release properties, too. Each shirt made using Repreve will be made up of roughly two recycled plastic bottles.
“Repreve with Sorbtek technology brings unparalleled benefits that are new to the casual and dress shirt market,” Victor Chao, chief marketing and product development officer for Esmetex, said in a statement.
To start, Esmetex will launch two yarn-dyed fabric blends, one 54 percent cotton/46 percent Repreve, the other 70 percent cotton/30 percent Repreve, each with a 4.5-ounce weight and 57-inch width.
“Consumers love the benefits of active wear, but traditionally haven’t been able to get those same benefits in their everyday casual and dress shirts,” Chao added. “Fabrics made with Repreve and Sorbtek offer that cool, dry feeling we desire in athletic clothes; with the added benefit of keeping plastic bottles out of landfills.”
