Two of Berlin’s sustainability trade shows will give way to a broader vision in 2019.
In January, Messe Frankfurt will introduce a new event hub, Neonyt, which will replace Greenshowroom and Ethical Fashion Show Berlin, and incorporate elements of the former fairs into the new global hub for fashion, sustainability and innovation.
Neonyt gives visitors from the fashion business a tangible experience of sustainability and innovation in by combining various formats under one roof, including the Neonyt Trade Fair, the Neonyt Fashion Show; the #Fashiontech by Premium Group and Fashionsustain by Messe Frankfurt conferences; the Showcase of Change exhibition; networking events; workshops; and the influencer-centered Prepeek event. The title Neonyt is meant to indicate renewal and a commitment by exhibitors to strive for novel approaches to the challenges of the future fashion and textile industry.
With a sharpened focus on fashion and stronger exhibitor curation, Messe Frankfurt aims to reflect sustainable fashion brands’ innovation.
“With Neonyt, we are boldly pursuing new paths–also with regard to the selection and compilation of brands from a fashion perspective. Our aim is to showcase the cutting edge of sustainable fashion,” said Thimo Schwenzfeier, show director Neonyt of Messe Frankfurt.
At the upcoming edition, all events throughout Neonyt will integrate water into the conversation, by exploring best-practice examples from the world of fashion and bold solutions to reshape the future. The Fashionsustain conference will take a deep dive into this topic, while selected other exhibits will explore concepts such as measuring companies’ “water footprint,” reduction of microplastic contamination, and water-based material innovations.
Leading off the speakers for Fashionsustain will be a keynote by Clare Press, sustainability editor-at-large for Vogue Australia, titled “We Are Water: Inspiration & Respiration.” Ensuing sessions will explore water as a global resource, water usage in small-scale and large-scale cotton farming, and a look at the future of water usage in fashion. Additional speakers will include Micke Magnusson, CEO of sustainable Swedish textile dye company Spindye, and Amira Jehia, co-founder of fair sweater label Blue Ben.
As in previous iterations of the event, Neonyt will also run the two-day Fashionsustain and #Fashiontech Thinkathon, which kicks off on Jan. 14, followed by staggered openings for the remaining events. The interdisciplinary team event brings industry leaders together to collaborate on innovative approaches to problems in the fashion and textile industry. Ideas conceptualized during the Thinkathon will be rendered as prototypes or presentations and exhibited at the Showcase of Change, alongside new innovations from across the industry.
In January, the Otto Group and Bikini Berlin, among others, will be hosting Thinkathon challenges. By doing so, they will join the ranks of previous hosts from 2018: Fashion Council Berlin, Hugo Boss, KPMG, Microsoft HoloLens, Techtextil/Texprocess and Zalando.
To emphasize the different ways sustainability can be incorporated into fashion, the Neonyt Trade Fair is divided into segments: Greenshowroom, Modern Casual, Urbanvibe and Craft. Alongside women’s, men’s and children’s apparel, the show will also showcase shoes, accessories and jewelry, and include dedicated spaces for innovations in the technology and beauty industries, too. On Jan. 15, 2019, the Neonyt Fashion Show will be showcasing the very best pieces by various national and international fashion labels, compiled in curated multi-brand looks. The Neonyt Fashion Show is therefore breaking with the traditions of classic fashion shows and presenting the latest eco-chic styles as part of individual outfits–building the bridge between the fashion world and the consumers and their vibrant ‘Art of Assembling.’
Kraftwerk Berlin, an adaptive reuse project that once housed the Ostberlin power plant, will be the host venue for Neonyt events, providing easy access to attendees of nearby Berlin Fashion Week events.
